Tarance Gaines - Workshop Facilitator

I am a 1972  graduate of Florida A & M University, where I received a Bachelor's degree in Sociology with double minors in Business and Corrections.

My professional career began with the State of Florida as a Probation and Parole Officer, where I supervised an average caseload of 85 felons each month, whose crimes ranged from petty theft to murder.

My observations over time revealed that 99% of of the people on my caseload had one common trait and that was, they had no definite plans for success after high school.

"If you don't know where you are going, any road will get you there"

The majority of the people on my case load lived day to day in a survival mode, they had no success strategy for their future - there was no "GPS".

As a volunteer, working with youth at a STEM Tech Program in Melbourne Fl, I was given an opportunity to reflect on my days as a Probation and Parole Officer. With new found clarity I was able to see in the kids, the early symptoms that  lead many of the people I supervised to the lifestyle that they fell into.  STEM Tech programs push children beyond their comfort zones because they are not familiar with what they are required to learn.  In working with the kids, I could see the beginning stages of the "I can't" mentality developing. They were reluctant to take on new challenges out of fear of failure but now understand they are learning.

From building Lego Robotics to industrial robotics, playing video games to designing video games for others to play; this STEM Tech program exposes kids to career possibilities they never would have experienced had the program not existed.

Hence, the inspiration of The C; - Exposing teens to the world of career possibilities that they are more likely to enjoy instead of just getting a job to pay the bills.
